Call for Advisors, Board Members and Educators
CAST Charter School Team invites interested educators and administrators with charter school experience to join the Team working on creation of a new innovative, liberal arts, college prep school.
In particular we are looking for individuals who would like to share their experience, infuse their knowledge and energy in organizing and running a charter high school. The candidates shall have practical and theoretical acumen in one or more aspects of the school operation:
Board Members
The essential experiences for the Board of Directors candidates are as follows:

Strategic Oversight: Through the charter application the Board adopts and upholds the CAST mission and vision for the school.

Operational Oversight: Oversees the operations of the school, while delegating day-to-day operational authority to the School Leader.

Financial Oversight: The Board ensures that the school remains a financially viable entity by overseeing the school’s financial condition.

Personnel: The Board approves all employment compensation at the school, including benefits through approval of the annual budget.

Contracts: The Board, in consultation with CAST leadership, approves all major contracts.
-
Consultant Support: Board members use their individual skills, knowledge, expertise and/or community relationships to support the school.

Community Relationships: Board members act as advocates and representatives of the school in creating and maintaining relationships with the community and other stakeholders.
Qualifications
A CAST Board Member work supports the vision that all of our students will achieve high levels of academic success resulting in opportunities for a brighter future. A Board Member makes the commitment to work and lead with determination, integrity and purpose, and embodies these essential qualities:

Passionate with an unwavering commitment to the school’s mission.

Has a shared vision for the school and the steps required to realize that vision.

Expects that all children can and will realize high levels of academic achievement.

Believes in the CAST school design and curriculum as the best means of accomplishing the school’s mission and realizing its vision.

Understands the promises contained in the school’s charter.

Understands the distinction between the roles and responsibilities of each person and entity involved.

Willingness to volunteer for one or more Board committees and the ability to contribute appropriate time and energy necessary to follow through on assigned tasks.

Results-oriented with the ability to work within a team structure.

Specific knowledge, experience, and/or interest in at least one element of governance for the school.

Commitment to a partnership based on mutual trust and respect among the Board, the principal and CAST Charter School.
Advisory Council Members
CAST will maintain a 5-10 Advisory Council. All members will have extensive operational, financial and academic experience that allows them to review CAST documents to ensure appropriate decision making. At least one member will be a director of a charter school within the NYS network of schools, upholding CAST’s value of participatory decision-making.
Responsibilities of an Advisory Council Member:

Advance Preparation: PUC-OPCS preps material a week before each Advisory Council to allow for adequate discussion during meetings. Advisory Council members are encouraged to properly prepare for each meeting by reading the material mailed or faxed in advance.

Respecting Time: Every effort is made to start and end meetings with regard to the allocated time. Advisory Council meetings should start and end on time and be no longer than 90 minutes in duration.

Thoughtful Decision Making: After discussion and investigation, the Advisory Council determines which items need to be presented for information and/or a decision by the Pillsbury United Communities Board of Directors. Generally, the procedure will be that items presented at one meeting will be acted on at the following meeting so that members have an opportunity to think about which way they will vote.

Integrity of Agenda: PUC-OPCS captures the conversation of the Advisory Council on pivotal decisions of the PUC-OPCS. The Advisory Council’s recommendations are presented to the Pillsbury United Communities Board of Directors for their final recommendation.

Attend and Participate: Members should be sensitive to their effectiveness and participation at Advisory Council meetings. Advisory Council members are expected to positively represent the Agency at community functions and events and throughout the course of their work and personal life.

NEXT STEPS
If you are interested in participating in the CAST Charter School’s Board, Advisory Council, or be a member of the Teaching and Administrative Team please conduct the following:
1)
Meet with a member of CAST Initial Team to learn more about the school.
2)
Submit a written intention to participate including the rationale to be on the team.
3)
Draft a short biography on your professional expertise and knowledge of charter schools.
CAST will review candidacy, including the relevance of expertise, and present appropriate members to the CAST Initial Team for final approval. Please not that advisory members, reports to the CAST Board of Directors. Approved candidates will be notified by CAST.
